Hantavirus: an additional contact case in Brussels. The risk for the population remains very low.

A Belgian member of the international team that participated in the medical evaluation on board the vessel MV Hondius was transferred today to Belgium.

In accordance with the recommendations of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and following consultation between the Dutch authorities, the FPS Public Health and the Brussels regional health authority (VIVALIS), this person is considered a low-risk contact.

No quarantine is required. Daily self-monitoring was already started in the Netherlands and will be continued for six weeks (from 10 May). Vivalis ensures the follow-up in this regard, as with the other low- risk contacts.

In Belgium, there are currently:

  • 2 high-risk contacts, in home quarantine and monitored by the Flemish authorities;
  • 5 low-risk contacts, including 3 in the Walloon Region and 2 in the Brussels-Capital Region.

All these persons are monitored by the regional health authorities. (Departement Zorg for Flanders, AVIQ for Wallonia and Vivalis for Brussels).

At present, the public health risk in Belgium is considered very low for the general population.
