Belgium supports civil nuclear development that helps us move forward
In 2025, Belgium gave 1,184,000 euros to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the prevention of nuclear proliferation and for activities in the fields of medicine, agriculture, gender and security.
As one of our priorities, the FPS Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation plays an important role in the fight against nuclear proliferation. To this end, it works together with the IAEA, which checks whether countries' nuclear programs remain peaceful. In addition, the Agency promotes the application of nuclear technology in various fields. Belgium is a leading player in this field, thanks to its recognised know-how in the field of scientific research and nuclear medicine.
In addition to the mandatory contribution to the Agency's regular budget, every year Belgium supports the IAEA with voluntary contributions.
The Technical Cooperation Fund was allocated an amount of EUR 780,080 at the end of 2025. This fund is the main financial instrument for improving access to nuclear technology in sectors such as health, food, agriculture, environment and energy.
In addition, Belgium also supported specific projects:
- 100,000 EUR for cancer research and nuclear medicine
- 103,920 EUR for a project on increased resilience of crops to climate change and diseases
- 100,000 EUR for nuclear security (support to the IAEA Training Centre)
- 100,000 EUR for nuclear studies for female students
The Belgian voluntary contributions thus ensure that nuclear technology is used for concrete applications that benefit the lives of all citizens.
