Commemorative ceremonies honouring the victims of terrorist attacks

Ten years after the attacks of 22 March 2016, Belgium is commemorating the victims of terrorist acts. This year as well, moments of remembrance and solidarity are being organised to pay tribute to all victims of terrorist acts in Belgium and to all Belgian victims abroad. This tenth commemorative tribute marks a special moment of remembrance and connection, with several ceremonies taking place in Brussels on 21 and 22 March 2026.

The programme has been coordinated by Brussels Airport Company, STIB/MIVB and the FPS Chancellery of the Prime Minister, in close collaboration with the victims' associations Life for Brussels and V-Europe.

On Saturday 21 March, a human chain of hope will be formed from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Maelbeek metro station. This symbolic action by STIB/MIVB invites collective reflection.

A commemoration organised by Brussels Airport Company will take place at Brussels Airport on Sunday 22 March from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. A ceremony will follow from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. at Maelbeek metro station, at the initiative of STIB/MIVB. Both moments will be attended by the victims, their loved ones and Their Majesties the King and Queen.

At noon, an official ceremony will be held by the FPS Chancellery of the Prime Minister on Rue de la Loi, at the Monument dedicated to the victims of terrorist acts. The programme includes reading out the names of the deceased, a minute's silence and the laying of flowers, as well as speeches, testimonies and an artistic contribution. The royal couple, victims and their loved ones, as well as representatives of government and emergency and intervention services, will be in attendance.

The ceremony will be broadcast live by national television stations VRT, VTM, RTBF and RTL.

With these commemorations, we wish to honour the victims whilst also conveying a message of resilience and hope.
